Well the first thing is you need to have a love for typography if you wish to draw type.

After a lifetime of working with type on client projects and making it "perfect" a strong desire to scribble letter forms was developed. This combined with an admiration for Kustom Kulture (hot rod) type, graffiti, hand painted signs, psychedelic rock posters and surf type of the 70's has brought about these messy letter forms.

Drawing type is like drawing anything else...understand the form and then render your interpretation of said form. If you want letters that look like 3 dimensional objects you will need the same elements as any 3D thing — high light and shadow. More contrast makes 3D things look glossy while soft shadow and light makes them look matte.
